Taking a leap of faith

These few days away from work have clarified what i've always suspected....that work makes me sick and borderline manic depressive.

This is really no big discovery, there has been a niggling whisper in the back of my mind for while, that has now morphed into a shrilling banshee's cry that i'm not where i want to be career-wise and need to get out...asap!

Getting out of a rut and taking that leap of faith is quite a scary undertaking! But sometimes you need to say a quick prayer, take a deep breath and take a flying leap. Wish me luck!

Any tips out there on how to write a letter of resignation?

To Africa with Love

Today marks Africa Day, a day dedicated to celebrating Africa and all things African. As always, what I would like to say has already been more eloquently put by someone else, hehehe.
I would like to share with you an excerpt from Thabo Mbeki’s speech “I am an African” as it sums up the love, the loyalty and the pride I have for this continent!

I am an African.

I am born of the peoples of the continent of Africa.
Whatever the setbacks of the moment, nothing can stop us now!
Whatever the difficulties, Africa shall be at peace!
However improbable it may sound to the sceptics, Africa will prosper!

Whoever we may be, whatever our immediate interest, however much we carry baggage from our past, however much we have been caught by the fashion of cynicism and loss of faith in the capacity of the people, let us err today and say - nothing can stop us now!”

Today it feels good to be an African!

Note to self

The beauty of hindsight;

  1. Do not attempt to rehash all that went wrong in your relationship, with an ex...no matter how amicable said breakup was, believe this is one conversation that will go nasty quickly;

  2. Do not attempt the above (see point 1) if less than 6 months has not lapsed since said breakup;

  3. Realise no amount of talking and mulling over it will right any wrongs, so do not bother;

  4. Lastly, becoming firm friends shortly after breakup is near impossible. Over time, it is a possibility but will not get off to a terrific start....and in some instances will not get off to any start at all, which is still okay!

Let's go over it all again
by James Fenton

Some people are like that.
They split up and then they think:
Hey, maybe we haven't hurt each other to the uttermost.
Let's meet up and have a drink.

Let's go over it all again.
Let's rake over the dirt.
Let me pick that scab of yours.
Does it hurt?

Let's go over what went wrong –
How and why and when.
Let's go over what went wrong
Again and again.

We hurt each other badly once.
We said a lot of nasty stuff.
But lately I've been thinking how
I didn't hurt you enough.

Maybe there's more where that came from,
Something more malign.
Let me damage you again
For the sake of auld lang syne.

Yes, let me see you bleed again
For the sake of auld lang syne

Being Boring...

Nothing like a bit of boredom and old fashioned down-time to revitalise the spirit. I welcome it with open arms, a dynamic pace of life is overrated if you never get time to catch your breath and enjoy the simpler things in life.

Being Boring
by Wendy Cope

'May you live in interesting times.' Chinese curse

If you ask me 'What's new?',
I have nothing to say
Except that the garden is growing.
I had a slight cold but it's better today.
I'm content with the way things are going.
Yes, he is the same as he usually is,
Still eating and sleeping and snoring.
I get on with my work.
He gets on with his.
I know this is all very boring.

There was drama enough in my turbulent past:
Tears and passion - I've used up a tankful.
No news is good news, and long may it last,
If nothing much happens, I'm thankful.
A happier cabbage you never did see,
My vegetable spirits are soaring.
If you're after excitement, steer well clear of me.
I want to go on being boring.

I don't go to parties.
Well, what are they for,
If you don't need to find a new lover?
You drink and you listen and drink a bit more
And you take the next day to recover.
Someone to stay home with was all my desire
And, now that I've found a safe mooring,
I've just one ambition in life: I aspire
To go on and on being boring.

I. HEART. Cyanide & Happiness

I woke up this morning with the random need to hear Tevin Campbell’s song “I’m ready”…don’t ask, my sub-concious works in weird ways! Unfortunately I will have to wait another *does quick calculation* 7hrs before I can get home and download his tracks from the Net. Mr Campbell was the object of many a pre-pubescent fantasy of mine…well before I found out that he now bats for the other team, what can I say, “another man down!”.

On the topic of random things, my lovely friend Star has encouraged my growing addiction to the comic strip, Cyanide and Happiness. This comic strip has me in tears its just so funny. If you’re looking for strait-laced ha-ha type comedy, then it may not be for you. Cyanide and Happiness doles out rather non-PC, cynical, black comedy-ish type humour…the very best in my opinion.

Let me give you a sneak preview if you don’t already know what I’m talking about (click on the link for more):

An encounter of the Toothless Kind

A good friend of mine had the sad misfortune of having a tooth extracted yesterday, not cool! Get well soon Shings, just keep popping them painkillers!

I’ve been lucky enough to escape such a trip to the dentist (touch wood), but it got me thinking….when did losing a tooth become such drama? Back in the day you’d actually get paid for doing so!!!

I have one scarring childhood memory regarding tooth loss!

Picture the scene: I must have been about seven and I’d lost one of my milk teeth, clearly I was quite ecstatic about this coz it meant I’d get a boost in allowance, Choc 99’s and jam donuts didn’t come cheap for a kid with no form of disposable income. Now don’t get me wrong, although I was seven I wasn’t stupid…i knew exactly who the tooth fairy was! However, I’d reasoned that as long as She knew that I didn’t know, the money would keep rolling in. That whole day I dropped all sorts of hints, “I really hope the tooth fairy knows where I live now” (we’d moved back home) blah blah blah. That night I plumped up my pillows, stuck my tooth under with a cutesy note attached (hey, I liked to a give convincing performance) with full knowledge of what the dawn would bring.

Alas, its seems my great marketing skills had drawn the attention of not only my mother, but my older sister…the first person I saw when I woke up the next morning. She was calmly perched on my bed looking at me with what looked like a triumphant smirk. In a panic I flung my pillow back hoping beyond all hopes that she had not got to my “stash”, but it was too late…there was nothing. When I turned back, she was proudly flaunting what should have been MY crisp, green $5 dollar bill and innocently asked, “Are you looking for this?.” I merely nodded, dreading what was to come, ”Listen, I need some money so I’ll take this and pay you back later okay” and with that statement she exited my room.

Many scenarios were going through my head at this point; Should I go after her? (not a chance mate, 12yr olds were not to be messed with), should I tell my mum? (and then suffer at the hands of the 12yr old when my mum was at work, hell nah)…no, there was only one thing to do; be quiet, keep my head down and my nose clean or I would end up swimming with the fishes capisce.

Moral of the story: I think you owe me some money Tendi!

Have a great weekend folks!

Umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh...

This weekend was a bit of an eye opener of sorts. I hung out and spoke to friends that I’d somewhat neglected during my funk. What I love about these individuals is their “staying power”, it’s great to know there’re those who’ll have your back when the chips are down.

This thought-train then got me thinking about all the people who’d had an “umbrella” of sorts when many a storm was brewing in my life, from my gorgeous siblings, to friends I’ve known for a lifetime and those who I’ve felt like I’ve know for a lifetime.

Sadly, this kind of reflecting made me think of those individuals who’d been fair-weather friends, who at the first sign of trouble were nowhere to be seen. Those who expected you to be there through all their shit but didn’t have the courtesy to return the favour when the tables where turned. As painful at the process of weeding all the “bad” individuals in our lives is, it helps us appreciate the great people around us…the one’s who always have an umbrella ready, just in case. The ones to whom we are more than happy to return the favour.

“When the sun shine
We shine together
Told you i'll be here forever
Said I'll always be your friend
So come on out and stick it till the end.

Now that it's raining more then ever
Know that we'll still have each other
You can stand under my Umbrella
You can stand under my Umbrella”

Any Takers?

"If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life."
